Tomie dePaola, born September 15, 1934, in Meriden, Connecticut, was a beloved author and illustrator, known for children’s books like “Nana Upstairs & Nana Downstairs” and “Strega Nona.” He studied art at Pratt Institute, taught art, earned a master’s degree, and wrote over 270 books in a career spanning 50 years. dePaola’s first book, “The Wonderful Dragon of Timlin,” was published in 1966. He received numerous awards, including the Laura Ingalls Wilder Medal in 2011.
